India’s Remarkable “Digital Stack” to Catalyse Papua New Guinea’s Technological Transformation

In a monumental stride towards global digital empowerment, India is extending the transformative prowess of its digital public infrastructure (DPI), famously known as the “India Stack,” to Papua New Guinea, an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The stage was set with the inking of a visionary Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Papua New Guinea’s Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT), witnessed by distinguished dignitaries from both nations.

This historic accord follows a recent rendezvous between India’s Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Electronics and IT and Papua New Guinea’s Minister for ICT.  The India Stack, an exemplar of digital innovation, is now open to all nations poised to embark on the digitalization odyssey that has surged in recent times. This strategic partnership emphasized how it exceeded the previous conversations around technology disparities, now fostering collaboration between like-minded nations to spearhead DPIs (Digital Public Infrastructures) and co-create a thriving technology and innovation ecosystem.

The MoU signing ceremoniously unveiled profound deliberations on a spectrum of digital dimensions, including digital ID, digital public infrastructure, digital payments, data security, digital governance, and internet connectivity. Papua New Guinea, driven by a resolute vision, aims to unfurl a pioneering national digital ID system by 2025. In this synergistic venture, both nations envision harnessing digital public infrastructure to seamlessly open doors to an array of public and private sector services. Notably, the India Stack has not only galvanized the nation’s economic growth but has also laid the bedrock for a socially and financially inclusive society.

This transformative feat has captivated global attention, prompting other nations to follow suit, notably India’s pivotal role during its G20 presidency, advocating worldwide backing for DPI development, especially in burgeoning economies. It judiciously recommends that while emulating India’s trailblazing DPI implementation, a holistic approach must be embraced. Key facets encompass user-centric design, inclusivity, robust engagement, and tailoring DPIs to suit the unique needs of diverse population segments.

As the curtains rise on this unprecedented partnership, India’s digital prowess takes flight, propelling Papua New Guinea’s technological evolution into a realm of limitless possibilities. The India Stack becomes an emblem of collaborative innovation, a torchbearer guiding nations towards a future brimming with digital prosperity.
